Push to improve indigenous education

Top principals will be sent into indigenous schools to coach underperforming principals and demand change, under the Rudd Government’s latest push to lift education standards in Aboriginal communities. The Government will also fund the schools that are falling behind – provided they take steps to improve attendance rates, teaching, or literacy and numeracy results, or force parents to become more involved in their children’s education. Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard yesterday admitted the community had to change its attitude towards indigenous students – and not assume they would simply end up at ”the back of the class” – if results were to improve.
