Haneef investigation cost nears $8mb - Australia/Terrorism

4/4/08

Nine federal police staff members are working full time on the Mohamed Haneef case as the investigation cost nears $8 million. The cost of investigating Dr Haneef’s alleged links to a British terrorist cell is approaching $8 million, even though charges against him were dropped more than eight months ago, Fairfax has reported today. An independent inquiry into what went wrong with the probe into the former Gold Coast hospital registrar is expected to start this month. Responding to a question on notice in federal parliament, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said it had nine members working on the Haneef matter full time, while five others provided assistance to the investigation “periodically”. Dr Haneef was held for 12 days without charge in July last year following his arrest at Brisbane International Airport in connection with a botched UK terror plot.
