Take more than 700 ancient cultures. Overlay the legacy of 150 years of proselytising from every variety of Christian. Haul them through German, British and Australian hands on a journey to self-governance. Add the sudden wealth of vast resources, the apparatus of a different world, and rapid social changes – good and ill. Fast-forward to modernity. Dynamic is the word Papua New Guinea aficionados use to try to capture it all. But the transition from traditional to modern realities is taking a heavy toll.
