The National Government has not provided any money for 12 years to put together reports to the United Nations Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. Since ratifying and signing the UN convention on January 12, 1995, PNG has failed to send reports to the UN Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Secretary of the Department of Community Development Joseph Klapat said this was because the Government did not provide any specific funds in that period for CEDAW. Mr Klapat said this while announcing PNG was now compiling the first and second periodic reports on discrimination against women in the country.

Women beware of PMV ‘trap’
10/5/08
Women using the public transport regularly have been warned to be wary of bus drivers and their crew. Yesterday, the brother of a Grade Six girl who was kidnapped on April 16 in Port Moresby said: “I want to warn all women – whether young or old – who use the buses to commute to work, to be wary of bus drivers and their crew who act suspiciously either through their body language or eye signals.”John Nema, a financial analyst with the Bank of Papua New Guinea, and from Western Highlands, said: “Sometimes women have to be careful that they don’t get ‘snatched’ from a bus-stop area. Be always careful when a bus approaches as PMV drivers are always reckless.”
