Woman sentenced to 15 years for killing abusive husband

The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old woman to 15 years in prison for murdering her husband in January 2005. The court declared N. R., a housewife, guilty of shooting her 34-year-old husband to death with his unlicensed gun while he was taking a shower at their family home on January 10, 2005. The court also ordered the defendant to pay JD3,100 in compensation to the victim’s family. Defence lawyer Zahra Sharabati told The Jordan Times that she plans to appeal the sentence. “My client killed her husband in self-defence and in a moment of extreme fear and lack of balanced thinking. The victim was constantly abusing her and had threatened to kill her minutes before she shot him dead,” Sharabati said, calling the sentence “high”.

Court upholds woman’s death sentence
Rana Husseini; 15/7/08
The Criminal Court last week upheld a March death sentence passed against a 30-year-old woman convicted of stabbing her husband to death on April 20, 2007. The tribunal declared the woman, a mother of four, guilty of the premeditated murder of her husband and handed her the maximum punishment. But the Cassation Court overturned the verdict, asking the court to reconsider its decision and reduce the verdict “because the element of plotting the murder was missing in the case”. “The defendant’s actions do not constitute a premeditated murder as the timing between her decision to kill her husband and actually stabbing him is not enough to prove that she plotted to murder the victim,” the Cassation Court said. But on Sunday, the Criminal Court insisted on its previous ruling, saying the woman did plot to murder her husband, handing the defendant the death sentence for the second time.
