White House mourns USA troop toll - Iraq

24/3/08

The White House has described news of US military deaths in Iraq reaching 4,000 as a “sober moment” but says their sacrifices “will not be in vain,” a spokesperson says. Dana Perino said George Bush, the US president, “feels each and every one of the deaths very strongly and he grieves for their families”. However, she said that “he wants them to know that their sacrifices will not be in vain.” US Democratic politicians also condemned the toll, with presidential hopeful Barack Obama saying it was “time to end this war”.
