We Still Have the Majority: Lilo – Solomon Islands/Politics/RAMSI

Ali Tepuke; 12/11/07

Former Finance Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, says they still hold the majority even though three members crossed back to the government late yesterday afternoon and have been sworn in as Ministers. Speaking at a press conference last night, Mr. Lilo confirmed that the newly formed Opposition’s number currently stand at twenty-six Members of Parliament and that they are confident this number will increase. The three former backbenchers in the Sogavare Cabinet, who were sworn in as Ministers by the Governor General late yesterday, had, up until then, formed part of the group of Cabinet members that crossed to the Opposition over the weekend.

In a letter to the Leader of Opposition, Fred Fono, the three Makira Province MPs said contrary to Opposition claims as published in today’s issue of the Solomon Star, they registered their total support to the Grand Coalition for Change Government. Messrs. Waipora, Sitai and Ghiro said they had no intentions at all to switch to the Opposition Group but to remain with the government to implement its Bottom-up Approach Development Policy.

RAMSI Holds Talks with Malu’u Community
12/11/07
RAMSI Assistant Special Coordinator, Mataiasi Lomaloma, has held talks with chiefs, leaders and the community in Manakwai Village, North Malaita. Mr Lomaloma said his visit was an indication of how seriously RAMSI took the issue that arose after Tongan soldiers were alleged to have assaulted youths from Manakwai. “I made the visit so that I could personally meet with the community and hear what they wanted to say,” Mr Lomaloma said on his return to Honiara.
