US marine admitted murder in Iraq, court told

12/7/08

A US marine sergeant accused of murdering an unarmed Iraqi captive during fighting in the town of Fallujah was heard on tape in court yesterday telling how his squad argued over what to do with their prisoners and saying he “did one guy” as they tried to keep up with their unit. The recording was made when Sergeant Ryan Weemer, 25, was applying for a job with the US Secret Service. In the interview, Weemer said he and other squad members shot the unarmed Iraqis they were holding in a boarded-up house because they did not have the time to take them to jail. “We called up to the platoon leader and the response was, ‘Are they dead yet?’,” Weemer says on the tape. “They didn’t have weapons. They were just sitting there,” he told the interviewer.
