Union claims Chinese workers duped

A powerful building union says it has uncovered about 40 Chinese plasterers who were being underpaid, or in some cases not paid for up to two months, on a number of Melbourne building sites. The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union’s Shaun Reardon said at least six of the workers had not been paid for two months and all of them were being paid well below the industry standard. Union organisers raided sites yesterday. Mr Reardon said the Chinese workers, most of whom did not speak English, were found at sites including Princes Park, an apartment project in Dandenong and a high school in Maribyrnong – the last of which was a State Government project. He said the workers had sham contracts with a company called Q.D. Meltop.
