UN envoy returns to Burma

6/3/08

The UN special envoy to Myanmar has arrived in the country to resume mediation efforts with the ruling military government and urge it to begin reconciliation talks with the opposition. The visit on Thursday by Ibrahim Gambari will be his third since a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy rallies last September. Gambari is expected to discuss a planned referendum in May on a new constitution that is a key stage in what the military government calls its “road map to democracy”, leading to eventual elections in 2010.
