Haneef leak was important

The Brisbane barrister who leaked Mohamed Haneef’s record of interview to The Australian believes he had a responsibility to act because “the public debate was as important as anything in the courts” when it came to protecting his client’s rights. “I knew exactly what I was doing and the circumstances in which I was doing it and I had no ethical qualms about it at all,” Stephen Keim SC said. The record of interview revealed a series of discrepancies in the prosecution case against Dr Haneef that had been outlined in court. By providing it to reporter Hedley Thomas, Mr Keim triggered a chain of events that led to the collapse of terrorism charges against Dr Haneef and his release from detention.
