Stolen payout challenged

Gavin Lower; 9/11/09

The South Australian government today begins its legal challenge against the first successful compensation claim by a member of the Stolen Generations.  It is seeking to overturn a judgment that awarded $775,000 in damages and legal costs to a man taken from his family as a toddler. The case is set to refocus attention on calls for compensation schemes for Stolen Generations victims, 12 years after the landmark Bringing Them Home report recommended they receive payouts. Bruce Trevorrow won his case against the state of South Australia in 2007 after a decade-long legal battle for being removed from his family when he was 13 months old during a brief hospital stay and returned when he was 10 years old.
