South Australia’s Stolen Generations’ compensation appeal in limbo
Jamie Walker; 1/7/08
The death of the only member of the Stolen Generations to win court compensation could also end a bid by the state to scuttle the precedent. An Adelaide judge heard yesterday how an appeal by the South Australian Government against the historic judgment in favour of the late Bruce Trevorrow was effectively in limbo. Mr Trevorrow last year secured $775,000 in damages and interest for being illegally separated by South Australian authorities from his natural parents when he was an infant. The Aboriginal man died on June 20 in Victoria, aged 51. Lawyer Claire O’Connor, who had been acting for Mr Trevorrow for a decade, told judge Richard White that the legal team had not yet received instructions from his family on whether to continue to contest the government appeal.
