Smith condemns use of torture - USA/Terrorism
Mark Dodd; 10/2/08
The Rudd Government has strongly condemned the use of torture a day after US President George W.Bush vetoed legislation that would have banned the use of simulated drowning as an interrogation technique. A spokesman for Foreign Minister Stephen Smith yesterday declined to say whether information obtained using so-called “waterboarding” had been provided to or used by Australian government agencies. On Saturday, Mr Bush vetoed a bill that would have set limits on interrogation techniques used by the Central Intelligence Agency. It followed an admission last month by CIA director Michael Hayden that waterboarding had been used to obtain confessions from three top al-Qa’ida detainees including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, an alleged mastermind behind the 2001 World Trade Center attacks.
