Reconciliation chief hits back

It was “ludicrous and insulting” to suggest the 2020 Summit’s indigenous group failed to give sufficient weight to the plight of children, Reconciliation Australia chief executive Barbara Livesey said yesterday. Responding to criticism levelled by Aboriginal academic Marcia Langton, Ms Livesey said summit discussions had focused on short-term goals for improved education and a longer-term plan for nation-building - both strategies essential if Aboriginal children were to flourish. In a short paper reflecting on the summit and its aftermath, Ms Livesey and Jason Glanville, Reconciliation Australia’s programs and strategy director, called for an end to a polarised, adversarial discussion of the competing issues raised at the summit in Canberra on the weekend.
