Qantas smoke sales stir activists

Quantas has appointed a former tobacco industry executive to its board on the same day as it came under fire for resuming in-flight cigarette sales. The company announced yesterday that recently retired British American Tobacco executive Paul Rayner would join the board as a non-executive director. The appointment came as anti-smoking groups attacked the return this month of in-flight cigarette sales, 10 years after they were stopped. A letter recently sent to Qantas staff by management said: “It’s vital that duty free carts are taken out into the economy cabin, with the cigarettes displayed prominently on top”.
