Probe into Palm cop’s compo pay
Sean Parnell; 30/5/08
Queensland’s Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson has launched an internal inquiry into the $100,000 compensation payment made to policeman Chris Hurley over the Palm Island riots after revelations the officer had a contents insurance policy that should have covered his losses. The Australian yesterday revealed that Senior Sergeant Hurley had valued the contents of his police residence, which was destroyed by fire during the 2004 riots, at $34,419 with his insurer and had lodged a claim. But documents obtained under Freedom of Information laws show Sergeant Hurley also sought, and received, a $102,955 compensation payment from the Queensland Police Service to cover his losses. Sergeant Hurley had advised the QPS of the claim he lodged with CGU.
