Peter Garrett flags indigenous intervention in urban areas

John Lyons; 27/5/08

The possibility of federal intervention into suburban Aboriginal communities was flagged yesterday by Environment Minister Peter Garrett. He said the Rudd Government needed to “look seriously at some big steps” on quarantining welfare payments to ensure they were being used properly. Mr Garrett said if it became clear “particular strategies” from the Northern Territory intervention had worked, they should be considered for other communities, including for La Perouse in his Sydney electorate of Kingsford Smith. He was speaking after a series of articles in The Australian that detailed problems in the Aboriginal community in Sydney’s south-eastern suburbs.
