NT officer gets only nine months’ detention for cell attack

Ashleigh Wilson; 13/6/08

A Northern Territory police officer will spend nine months in home detention for bashing a handcuffed, drunk Aboriginal prisoner and then trying to destroy video evidence of the attack. Michael James Bourke, 35, kicked Graham Kunoth, 31, twice in the head as he lay on the floor of a cell in Tennant Creek on November 25, 2006. After the assault, Bourke tried to tape over CCTV footage of the area. NT Supreme Court judge Dean Mildren said the attack was not planned, but driven by “anger and frustration”.
