Howard French; 6/4/08
Fresh violence has erupted in a Tibetan region of south-western China, with disputed reports of eight people shot dead by police, as the Chinese Government vowed swift and severe punishment of Tibetans accused of rioting and taking part in last month’s protests. Police fired on protesters outside government offices in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province, along the Tibetan border, on Thursday night. Tibetan activists said the shooting left eight protesters dead.
