A string of bombing attacks in Baghdad yesterday killed at least 18 people and wounded 56 others, as a mutiny in the ranks of a key Iraqi militia, credited with helping the US forces to defeat al-Qa’ida in Iraq, threatened to plunge the country back into bloody sectarian violence. In the worst attack, 10 people were killed and 28 wounded when a booby-trapped car exploded in a crowded market area of the impoverished Shia district of Sadr City in northeastern Baghdad. In the central Allawi district, four people were killed and 15wounded when another car bomb exploded. And a car bomb targeting the convoy of a senior Interior Ministry official killed one civilian and a policeman and wounded six other policemen in the southeastern neighbourhood of New Baghdad.
