Man jailed in 35-year fight for Jerusalem home

A Palestinian man’s 35-year legal fight to prevent a Jewish settler group from taking his home in occupied East Jerusalem enters a critical phase this week when an Israeli court decides whether to keep him in jail for disobeying orders to vacate the property. Khalil Hanun’s wife, Nadia, told The Age that her husband was asked to attend police headquarters 11 days ago and was jailed without warning. A marketing manager with Nestle, Mr Hanun, 50, must pay a fine equivalent to $163 for every day his family refuses to vacate the home, plus $9700 in legal fees to the settler organisations who claim they own the home in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah. The Hanuns were made refugees by the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and were granted possession of the home in 1956 by the United Nations.
