A Catholic seminary school in Kokopo was praised for shaping and giving President Joseph Kabui the very foundations that defined his characteristics and the way he lived his life. Chanel College at Ulapia outside Kokopo was the school that President Kabui entered at the age of 14 and stayed for six years before graduating in 1972. His record at the school speaks for itself as principal John Maidang outlined. He said President Kabui was spoken of with high regard from the school even from the rector at the time. He said he was academically a top student, coming in first and second place in most of his subjects. In his final year he was elected the school captain.Mr Kabui, at the time, wrote that he attended Chanel College because he wanted to serve his people and the country.
