Labor ‘blocked’ pulp mill critic

Andrew Darby; 9/4/08

Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon has become embroiled in a new dispute linked to the $2 billion Tamar Valley pulp mill following accusations that his Government intervened to prevent a critic of the mill from becoming a magistrate. A shredded document reconstructed by state Greens members showed that Justice Minister Steve Kons supported the appointment of barrister Simon Cooper, a mill critic, as a new magistrate in advice to cabinet. But Greens leader Peg Putt said support for Mr Cooper was dropped as payback because he spoke out against Gunns’ decision to pull out of an independent assessment process for the mill last year.
