Islanders want sustainable fishing

13/12/06

Councillor Jeremiah Yana said for too long the islanders had watched as fishing companies exploited their fish and other marine resources. The people of Tami Island in Finschhafen district, Morobe Province have vowed to protect their marine environment at all costs. The islanders said this during the launching of a plan to protect the fisheries resources in the area on Monday. The Community Based Management (CBM) plan is an initiative spearheaded by the Coastal Fisheries Management Project and the National Fisheries Authority with funding from the Asian Development Bank.
