The trial of Tariq Aziz, the former Iraqi deputy prime minister, and eight others charged in connection with the execution of dozens of businessmen, has been adjourned until May 20. The trial, which began on Tuesday at 5pm (1400 GMT) in Baghdad’s Green Zone, was adjourned after a short 45-minute opening session. The trial had been set to begin earlier in the day, but was delayed due to what Raouf Abdul-Rahman, a judge at the trial, called “organisational and procedural measures”. He said the defendants had not been brought to the courthouse on time. Eight defendants, including Aziz, are facing charges in the case.
