Indigenous work scheme a dole bonanza

The nation’s key Aboriginal employment scheme is a welfare trap that operates on the philosophy that indigenous people are incapable of performing mainstream jobs. In a paper released today, Sara Hudson, policy analyst for the Centre for Independent Studies think tank, argues that the Community Development Employment Projects scheme has created disincentives for indigenous people to obtain real jobs. At the same time, bureaucracies that profit from the scheme have been entrenched within remote communities. Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has announced a review of CDEP to report next year, with a discussion paper currently circulating on the issue.
