Indigenous voice to be restored to reef agency

Padraic Murphy; 19/6/08

Environment Minister Peter Garrett has moved to give a greater voice to Aboriginal issues in the management of the Great Barrier Reef by reversing a Howard government decision to remove an indigenous representative from the body that manages the reef. Mr Garrett announced the decision yesterday as one of the key changes to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. He said the area under management had grown from 12,000sqkm when the park was declared by the Whitlam government in 1975 to 344,400sqkm now, and there was a need for indigenous representation.
