Housing program targets thousands

Patricia Karvelas; 12/4/08

About 750 houses will be built and 2500 homes upgraded to improve the living conditions of 80 per cent of Aborigines living in the 73 remote and urban communities targeted by the Northern Territory intervention. Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin said yesterday 230houses would be demolished under the plan and replaced with new dwellings and essential support infrastructure such as water and sewerage. But as was stipulated by the previous government, security of tenure will be a key element in allocating this funding. Communities receiving capital works under the program will need to enter into a lease for a time deemed appropriate to the life of the capital works being funded.
