Hopeful prospects in expanded sea-bed territory

A massive expansion of Australia’s seabed jurisdiction has opened up a “potential bonanza” in new oil and gas discoveries. Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson said yesterday the UN had confirmed Australia’s jurisdiction over an extra 2.5 million square kilometres. “That is an area five times the size of France, 10 times the size of New Zealand, and 20 times the size of the United Kingdom,” Mr Ferguson said. He said the areas had been only partially explored, but they had the potential to add significantly to the country’s oil and gas resources.
