Homeless families on rise, says new study

Rising rents have driven up the number of homeless families in Australia, a major new study says, and Queensland is at the forefront of the problem. Queensland accounts for more than a quarter of the nation’s 104,676 homeless people. The report, by Swinburne University’s Associate Professor David Mackenzie and RMIT’s Associate Professor Chris Chamberlain, found the number of homeless Australians climbed 5 per cent between the 2001 and 2006 censuses despite years of prosperity. It found while there were fewer 12 to 18-year-olds living on the streets, the number of family groups without stable accommodation jumped to 10,000 parents and 16,000 children.
