HIV rise leads to monitoring rethink

Sean Parnell; 7/8/08

Alarming new data on the increase in HIV infections in Australia has prompted the federal Government to consider a new regime of testing and monitoring. The Monash University review of HIV epidemiology, commissioned by the Department of Health and Ageing, found thehandling of the illness was well co-ordinated, providing health authorities with useful information. But with an increase in infections threatening Australia’s good reputation for HIV prevention, the report has suggested changes to improve the protection of at-risk populations. About 70 per cent of the new HIV infections are among gay men, and 20 per cent among heterosexuals, of which half come from sexual contact with people from high-risk countries.
