Catholic priests and human rights activists say Hindu radicals engineered recent anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat with an eye on the state election in December. Violence began on Sept. 18 in Surat district’s Kosadi village after Muslims allegedly killed a member of a Hindu right-wing organization formed to protect cows. Representatives of the organization had visited the village to verify reports that its Muslim residents slaughtered a calf. Hindus revere the cow as a form of god and a law prohibits killing the animal. Muslims say the alleged cow-slaughter incident was concocted to cause trouble.
