Hicks pays bill for health treatment

Verity Edwards; 7/7/08

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks is paying for his own psychological treatment in Sydney, and travelling interstate whenever he can afford it. Hicks’s father, Terry, told The Australian his son had been attending a voluntary rehabilitation service in Sydney that dealt mainly with refugees and people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He said attending the sessions at the interstate service, which included access to doctors and psychologists, was appropriate for his son because he was less likely to be noticed than in Adelaide. “Adelaide’s a small place,” Mr Hicks said. “If you go to Sydney, there are more people in groups, there’s a bigger population base.” He said his son was travelling to Sydney only when he could afford the airfare.
