Difficulty securing finance for its $2 billion pulp mill has forced Gunns to seek extensions to wood-supply and sovereign-risk agreements. The timber company had planned to begin construction of the mill in northern Tasmania in September last year, postponing that to January this year due to delays in the federal assessment process. The start date was revised again to the end of June, and this date was used in the wood-supply and sovereign-risk agreements between Gunns and the Tasmanian Government.

The environmental impact of Tasmania’s pulp mill project should have been better assessed before it was approved, a court has heard. Lawyers For Forests today began their bid in the Federal Court to overturn former environment minister Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to approve the controversial Gunns’ pulp mill in northern Tasmania’s Tamar Valley. They are seeking a judicial review of Mr Turnbull’s decision, which was supported by the then Labor opposition.
