Bahrain’s Labor Minister Majed Al-Alawi has warned of an impending “Asian tsunami” in the Gulf states because of the heavy dependence on foreign workers. In an interview published in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper yesterday, Al-Alawi said the presence of almost 17 million foreign workers in the Gulf, mostly from the Indian Subcontinent, represented “a danger worse than the atomic bomb.” “I am not exaggerating that their number will reach almost 30 million in 10 years from now,” he told the Arabic daily. Alawi said that Gulf nationals were “lazy” and “spoilt”, relying on foreign workers for the simplest of tasks.
