Grasping the opportunity

The killing Tuesday of two Islamic Jihad members in Nablus showed that Israel is prepared to engage in brinksmanship of the most counterproductive and violent nature. Having struck a ceasefire agreement in Gaza only, Israel obviously intends to push Palestinian factions to the brink by assassinating Palestinians in the West Bank. By acting with impunity in the West Bank, Israel is also undermining the government of Salam Fayyad, which has been trying to assert its own security control, with agreement from Israel. That, in turn, undermines Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president with whom Israel claims that it is trying to negotiate an end of conflict.
