The government is expected to draw up a draft law on human trafficking, Minister of Interior Eid Fayez said on Monday. Fayez, who chaired a meeting at his ministry yesterday to discuss the issue, said the concept of human trafficking cannot be accurately defined but that Jordan combats all forms of this act. The meeting was also attended by Labour Minister Bassem Salem, Environment Minister and acting Minister of Health Khalid Irani, Minister of Industry and Trade Amer Hadidi, Justice Minister Ayamn Odeh and Minister of Social Development Hala Latouf. “Jordan takes all necessary measures to ensure guest workers and all visitors the utmost care and respect out of an unwavering stand promoting and safeguarding human rights,” Fayez told The Jordan Times. He added that the government is always on alert to defend the country’s image when groundless accusations are directed at its people and institutions.

Foreign Ministry dismisses Indonesian human trafficking claim

The Foreign Ministry on Monday refuted news reports alleging that 40 Jordanians have been banned from leaving Indonesia on charges of human trafficking. “We only have 16 Jordanians recruiting domestic helpers in Indonesia and our embassy there is currently following up on their situation,” Ahmad Mubaidin director of the Foreign Ministry Consular Department told The Jordan Times yesterday. In a fax received by the Jordan Times on Sunday, Jordanian businessman Osama Hindi alleged that the Indonesian government issued an arrest warrant for him and another 39 Jordanians in connection with the illegal trafficking of Indonesian female workers. Hindi claimed that his passport was confiscated at Sukarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta while he was attempting to return to Jordan, adding that Indonesian authorities at the airport demanded he pay $12,000 to avoid jail time.
