Gazans wounded in border protest
30/5/08
At least 15 Palestinians have been wounded after Israeli troops used gunfire to stop about 3,000 Hamas supporters from approaching one of the Gaza Strip’s main border crossings with Israel, witnesses say. Palestinian medical workers said on Friday that at least two of the wounded are in a critical condition. “The IDF [Israeli army] will operate with all its strength to prevent the demonstrators from approaching the security fence or the crossing … and from entering the state of Israel,” an Israeli military official said. During the standoff, Israeli forces shot into the crowd to “make the rioters back off”, the official said. Before the protest, the Israeli army posted signs telling Palestinians that they faced “Danger of Death” if they tried to approach the Sufa crossing.

IDF arrests 60 Gazans; mortar hits Negev home, but doesn’t explode
Fadi Eyadat; 30/5/08
The Israel Defense Forces arrested 60 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip overnight Wednesday over suspicions they were involved in terrorist activity. The detainees were taken to Israel for questioning. The arrest raid took place during an IDF engineering corps operation in the Gaza neighborhood of Sajaiya. The troops have all left the area and returned to Israel. Meanwhile Thursday, a mortar shell fired from the Gaza Strip directly hit a home in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional council, but did not explode. Some property damage resulted from the strike. Earlier, Gaza militants fired five mortar shells and three Qassam rockets into the western Negev. Two Qassams struck just south of Ashkelon and the third hit the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council. No injuries or damage were reported in these strikes.
