The Criminal Court last week sentenced a 29-year-old man to death and his former fiancée to 20 years in prison after convicting them of murdering the woman’s fiancé in December 2006. The court handed Thaer M., an elevator specialist, the death sentence for stabbing Amer Hassan, 28, to death with a dagger on December 12, 2007. The court also convicted H. M., 21, guilty of complicity in murdering her fiancé, handing her the maximum penalty for the charge. The court said the defendant was to wed the victim on January 11, 2007 but decided against it and instead contacted her ex-fiancé, Thaer M. “The defendant asked Thaer to kill her fiancé because she no longer wanted to marry him. The defendant promised to marry Thaer instead if he carried out her request,” the court said.
