Female school dropouts get second chance

A drive to encourage female school dropouts to continue their education and attain life skills was launched yesterday in a largely underprivileged and conservative community in east Amman. Staff at the Social Support Centre in Sahab met with some 20 girls between 14 and 22 years of age from the village of Al Salem and discussed the centre’s activities. SSC Director Nihaya Dabdoub said nearly half of the girls had dropped out of school in eighth grade due to various social and economic reasons, while others left their studies after the 10th grade as no secondary school was available nearby. “Most of these girls have been deprived of their basic right to education for various reasons and face a bleak future,” Dabdoub said.
