A vessel grounded on the northern shores of Aqaba for over two months has drawn anger from environmentalists, who are demanding that authorities remove it immediately to prevent a potential ecological disaster. The 80-metre long cargo vessel, Shorouq, was swept ashore by strong winds on March 6. After several failed attempts to tow the vessel back out to sea, the owner, a Jordanian, sold it to local scrap merchants. More than two months later, however, and the ship remains grounded with no immediate sign of a breakthrough.
