Dozens killed by car blast at Kabul embassy

Bruce Loudon; 8/7/08

More than 40 people, including a diplomat and an Indian military attache, were killed last night and at least 70 wounded when a suicide bomber smashed a car laden with explosives into the Indian embassy in Kabul. Several Indian soldiers on guard at the embassy were also among the dead and wounded, and government officials in New Delhi described the situation as “a full-scale emergency”. The bombing was the biggest Taliban assault on Kabul since Afghan President Hamid Karzai was forced to flee from a military parade in the centre of the city on April 27 following a gunfire attack by the insurgents.
