Israel approved on Wednesday the construction of 84 buildings in West Bank settlements, despite a 10-month moratorium on new building in the territories that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced last week. The coordinator of government activities in the territories, Maj. Gen. Eitan Dangot, gave the official approval for the move after the political echelon authorized the list of buildings. It is possible that the decision was meant as a goodwill gesture, ahead of a meeting on Thursday between Netanyahu and settler leaders. Earlier Wednesday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak invited settler leaders to meet with him urgently in a bid to lower tensions, amid a showdown between security forces and settlers over the construction freeze. Only two heads of West Bank regional councils showed for at the meeting.

Israel strips more Arabs of residency
Mohammed Mar’i; 3/12/09
As part of its efforts to Judaize Jerusalem, the Israeli Interior Ministry stripped 4,577 Palestinians of residency status in the city last year, an Israeli human rights organization said on Wednesday. Statistics obtained by the Israeli Center for the Defense of the Individual, HaMoked, under a Freedom of Information Act request show that Palestinians lost their Jerusalem residency status last year at a faster rate than at any time in the history of Zionist occupation.
