The family of Cornelia Rau has expressed their disbelief that the mentally ill woman was allowed by her public guardian to go off her medication and travel overseas, ending in her detention in a Hamburg hospital for seven weeks. Ms Rau, who suffers from schizophrenia, was kept in isolation in a closed ward at the hospital until late last month. She is now believed to be staying in a small town south of Hamburg – where she has relatives – but her Australian family is concerned she is not being properly monitored. Her sister Christine said it “defied logic” that the Guardianship Board of South Australia had permitted her to travel overseas while authorising a three- to six-month break from her medication. “Any layperson who knew anything about her case could figure out it’s a recipe for disaster,” Christine Rau said. “If somebody is sick and they have a guardian, you keep them safe, and this hasn’t happened”.
