Crackdown on USA military in Japan - Human Rights
21/2/08
The US military has imposed tight restrictions on personnel and their families stationed in Japan following the arrest last week of a marine on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl. Troops on the southern island of Okinawa have been confined to bases, places of work or off-base housing starting early on Wednesday, US military officials said. The restrictions, which go beyond a midnight curfew already in place for enlisted marines, will last indefinitely. They were implemented as a string of crimes blamed on American soldiers has stoked local opposition to the US presence.
