At least seven civilians are said to have died in an attack by a suicide lorry bomber on an Iraqi army checkpoint near the northern city of Mosul. The attack took place late on Wednesday near Adayaa, 25km southwest of Mosul, Brigadier-General Khaled Abdul Sattar, a spokesman for the Iraqi army, told the AFP news agency. “Seven civilians were killed and 12 people were wounded, many of them soldiers,” he said. Mosul, located 370km north of Baghdad, is the focus of a major military operation by Iraqi and US forces against al-Qaeda in Iraq fighters. The US military had earlier reported five people dead in what it said was a car-bomb explosion.
