The confirmed death toll in China’s Sichuan province from last week’s earthquake has risen by more than 6000 to 39,577. Another 236,359 people had been injured, Li Chengyun, the vice governor of Sichuan, said. The Central Government earlier today said that more than 66,000 people were dead or missing from the May 12 earthquake. The Government’s confirmed death toll in Sichuan and neighbouring areas today was lower – at 32,361 – followed by the figure given by Mr Li. However the Sichuan and central government authorities have repeatedly given different figures. Authorities say they expect the overall toll to exceed 50,000.
