Quentin Bryce has been sworn in as Australia’s 25th governor-general, breaking 107 years of tradition as the first woman in the job. As someone who has a long history of succeeding in male-dominated arenas, the lawyer, academic and champion of women’s rights has taken the ultimate prize and one with trappings that are the stuff of dreams, living at Yarralumla in one of Australia’s finest homes, travelling the world first-class and being referred to as “your excellency”. Occasionally you also get to entertain the Queen. By these measures Ms Bryce, distinguished legal mind and former sex discrimination commissioner, is way over-qualified.
