Mary MacKillop was renowned for her acts of charity. It came naturally to the iconic Australian nun, who was herself born into poverty. At the age of 15 – nine years before she would found the Sisters of St Joseph – Mary was thrust into the role of breadwinner for her seven siblings. “Growing up, Mary knew what it was like to be poor and homeless,” Josephite sister Marie Foale said yesterday. Mary was the oldest daughter of Scottish migrants, and her father Alexander never adapted well to life in Australia.
